Which Sunblock is better SPF 30 or 50?
How to Use Sunblock?
We use sunblock SPF 30 or 50 to protect our skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays. However, many of us do not know which sunblock to use or how to apply it properly. There are two types of sunblock:
- Chemical sunblock
- Physical sunblock
Physical Sunblock:
Physical sunblock reflects and blocks the sun’s rays when they fall on the skin. Sunblocks containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are typically classified as physical sunblocks.
Chemical Sunblock:
Chemical sunblock absorbs the sun’s rays when they come into contact with the skin. If you see ingredients like avobenzone, oxybenzone, salicylic acid, or PABA listed on a product, it is a chemical sunblock. Additionally, physical and chemical mixed sunblocks are available on the market and are usually recommended for sensitive skin.
For Different Skin Types:
- People with oily skin often complain that sunblock makes their skin oilier. Gel-based or compact sunblocks are recommended for them.
- Those with normal to dry skin can use lotion-based sunblocks.
- For dry skin, cream-based sunblocks are the most suitable option.
Which is Better: Sunblock SPF 30 or SPF 50?
Many patients ask dermatologists whether they should use SPF 30 or SPF 50.
SPF primarily protects against UVB rays:
- SPF 30 provides 97% protection.
- SPF 50 provides 98% protection.
The difference is just 1%, but using SPF 50 is particularly important for people who:
- Work outdoors in the sun for extended periods.
- Work in kitchens exposed to heat and light.
- Work under intense media lights.
- Undergo dermatological procedures like peeling, microdermabrasion, or carbon laser treatments.
How much sunblocks Should You Use?
To cover your face, ears, and neck, use 5 grams (approximately 1 teaspoon or 2.5 fingertip units) of sunblock. Apply it 15 minutes before going outside. Sunblock remains effective for 2–3 hours after application. If you plan to go out in the sun again or cook after this time, wash off the previous sunblock thoroughly before reapplying.
Even if you are indoors, sunblock is essential because UVA rays can penetrate glass and damage your skin.
By using sunblock properly, you can solve half of your skin problems. Enjoy healthy skin with the proper use of sunscreen!
